We wind our way out of the morning bustle of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. We are excited about the opportunity to hit the road once again. At the same time, we must admit that the three days we have spent in that city were unexpectedly productive: we got hold of our visas for the final leg of our African trip, visited the European Union Delegation as well as got some feel of the African metropolis. But still, but still... we want to quickly run away from this place. We want to see the famous mountain landscapes in the north of Ethiopia and historical evidence; besides, we have to hurry up to catch up with the overall schedule of our biking expedition.

It is early July and I am travelling in eastern Ukraine with a group of journalists to see first-hand how the European Union is providing help to people affected by the ongoing conflict. Nature is in bloom and a ceasefire is "officially" in force in this region of Ukraine ravaged by a conflict which in over a year has left five million in need of humanitarian help.

Within European external aid, humanitarian assistance to victims of natural or man-made disasters has a distinct nature; unlike development cooperation, which can be linked to broader political objectives, humanitarian aid is based solely on four principles – humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence. Those most in need should benefit from the EU's humanitarian aid, independent of any political, economic or military considerations.

The plan: March 26 – April 9, Uganda, 2000 km. After nearly a month and a half of travelling just two together, we have reached Uganda and we are just on time to meet our beloved girls and a few friends who, as previously planned, are coming to spend some time with us here. This is not going to be an easy breezy week with friends though. We have already agreed through emails on a fairly intense and varied itinerary to explore this land. The Nile, mountains, parks with gorillas and other beasts – will we manage everything?

South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland; travelled - 3300km Finally we are on the road with our bikes. Martins is thinging in his helmet - on the road again.... All the hustle and troubles of this world are left behind, and we are riding towards new adventures and discoveries. One could claim that everything in this world has been already discovered, there is nothing left to explore, in particular when traveling to places where civilization has evolved for thousands of years. The same applies to the most popular tourist sites, where millions of people visiting each year....can you find anything unspoiled and special there? However for two of us this is still a major novelty and there is clearly a feeling of pioneering. We have dreamed about this trip for so long trying to imagine how it is going to be, but now this is for real and we are experiencing it right here, right now. We are learning new things for ourselves and about ourselves. And we also hope that we will be able to share this joy of discovering the great continent of Africa with our friends and followers at home in particular with Latvian school kids who are controlling our trip remotely.

The distance is not small; besides, we don’t really know what kind of roads we are going to drive on and we can only guess what adventures are in store for us on this route. One thing is certain though – on March 27 our beloved girls and some friends are set to arrive in the Ugandan capital Kampala, and we must not miss that!

Our biking expedition has arrived in Uganda, which is also called the Pearl of Africa. This pearl appears brighter also because we have a week of rest planned ahead, and we will be joined by our beloved girls and a few good friends. Once we are at the Ugandan border, we get in touch with Sabrina who is designated as the contact person of the European Union (EU) Delegation in Kampala. The good news is that Sabrina is not only willing to arrange a meeting for us in the EU Delegation and a visit to a project, but also kindly invites us to stay at her house. Her husband Arthur turns out to be a passionate biker: both have travelled half over Africa on his BMW, so they are pleased to greet and accommodate other biking pilgrims. This is an unexpectedly warm reception, and we feel very grateful.

Access to quality education is essential for development. Not only does education provide children, youth and adults with the knowledge and skills to be active citizens and to fulfil themselves as individuals, literacy in particular contributes directly to poverty reduction. It has been estimated that global poverty could drop by 12 % if all children in low income countries could read. Education also contributes to sustainable economic growth and to more stable and accountably societies and governments.

This presentation will explore the policy and conceptual implications of 'looking for awareness raising in unusual forms and places'. A sole focus on 'learning' in schools or on education, aid and development organisation led 'projects' in the global North means we may miss new opportunities and dynamics in awareness raising in a time of significant global change. This will be explored by critically reflecting on the presenter's research and practice around social and environmental impact in Sudan and Dubai, on new research on the military in development work and on research on international volunteering and corporate social responsibility. The presentation will also reflect on the importance of acknowledging 'accidental' encounters with development. These examples will provide a platform for discussing how and where we imagine awareness raising and development education, what the problems may be with relocating our understandings and practices, and what conceptual challenges such a change might present. We will also reflect on the opportunities such rethinking may offer in the context of austerity in the global North and the transformation of aid and development politics at a global scale.
